About Joan C. Warren, MSW
Joan Warren, MSW, has made a
significant impact in Stark County, Ohio for 33 years. She
assiduously served the community with heartfelt compassion
and dedication to the poor, the terminally ill, the
physically and mentally challenged, and people stricken with
ALS. Although Joan is widely known by the local healthcare
community for her marvelous service, she is especially known
for her contagious smile, good cheer, laughter, and
consistently kind nature.
Joan was reared by her mother
and grandparents, a remarkable family whose accomplishments
were significant in the black history of Ohio. Her
grandfather graduated from Morehouse University in Atlanta,
GA, taught mathematics and also served as a railroad
engineer. During Joan’s childhood, her mother majored in
English and music from Mount Union College and a Bachelor’s
Degree in Music Education from Tennessee State. Joan’s
mother taught English and music for Alliance city schools.
Joan’s background developed her strong character and paved
the way for her successful future. Although Joan grew up in
the heart of the segregation era of the 1940’s and 50’s,
this never hindered her to pursue her dream.
After obtaining a Bachelor of
Science degree in Social Welfare at Central State College in
Wilberforce, Ohio, Joan then received her Master’s Degree in
Social Work from the University of Connecticut. In 1983, she
began her long-term social worker services for the Visiting
Nurse Society of Central Stark County, which included
facilitating the ALS support group in Canton.
In March 1984, when Warren met
Pamela Cazzolli, the two co-facilitated the ALS Support
Group in Canton together, until Joan Warren retired in July
2007. In fact, Joan served the local support group for 24
years. From the
beginning of the organization until she retired, Joan Warren
served as the Director of Psychosocial Services. She has
helped countless of ALS families in the local community cope
with the emotional and physical aspects of the disease,
while helping them to obtain healthcare benefits and help at
home. Joan’s ongoing assistance and encouragement helped
Cazzolli to continue the mission.
Joan Warren has one daughter and
two grandchildren. Joan’s daughter won the Best Teacher of
the Year Award for the State of Minnesota in 2006. Later,
Joan received the Stark County Minority Health Award. In
January 2009, Joan lost her husband to cancer. However, she
continues volunteering her time to help others. |
